Landlord and Tenant wahala has come to stay, increase in rent today, quit notice tomorrow. Most times Tenants who cannot afford a new rent are forced to move out in search of alternative accommodation. Some Landlords out of greed and avarice intentionally and willfully increase house rent in order to collect new agency fee, legal fee and agreement fee.
The Population explosion in most metropolitan cities of Nigeria forces tenant to Rural areas where they can find cheaper accommodation. Meanwhile lawyers who specialize in Landlord and Tenant cases are looking for clients who have such cases. This disconnect can only be resolved if people make conscious effort to employ the services of Lawyers.
Sack your landlord by :
- Have a Lawyer as a best friend
- Know your right as a Tenant by getting a copy of Tenancy laws like the New Tenancy Law of Lagos State 2011 and reading them.
- Ensure you have a copy of Tenancy receipts and Tenancy agreement and have your lawyer read and interpret each of the clauses in the Tenancy agreement to you before you sign your signature.
- Always calculate your six months "Notice to Quit " to ensure it is accurate because some landlords backdate quit notices and this could formulate a good cause of action or defense for you in court.
- Note you can sue your Landlord for arbitrary increase in house rent and unlawful eviction.
Finally, do not succumb to threats by your Landlord...
Don't be a Learner, shine your eyes!.
